It is very easy to say you “can” in Korean, if you already know how to conjugate the verb in future tense. Yes, just add ㄹ at the verb stem. Then say “수 있어요.” That’s it! Can = -ㄹ 수 있어요. For most verbs with -하다, it is “-할 수 있어요.”
Literally, “수 있다” means “There is a way to do …” i.e., ability to do something. Remember: 있다 = There is; 없다 = There is not. To say “Cannot,” therefore, you just say “수 없어요” instead of “수 있어요.”
-ㄹ 수 있어요 = There is a way to do … = Can
–ㄹ 수 없어요 = There is no way to do … = Can not
It’s a piece of cake, isn’t it? Of course, there is also a less simple way to say “can not” – by adding “못” just before a short verb or “하다.” ^^
