When you end a sentence with endings -군, -구나, or -군요, you are expressing that you have just realized something from your observation or “discovery,” as if you were speaking to yourself. You can use these particles for verb/adjective stems, and for nouns. If you add them to nouns, follow the usual phonetic rules:
- If the noun ends with a vowel, just add them:
- 아, 이게 성게구나! Ah, (I’ve just realized) this is a sea urchin!
- If the noun ends with a consonant, first say -이, then 군, 구나, or 군요:
- 달력을 보니 올해가 윤년이군 According to the calendar, this year is a leap year (I’ve just realized)
Note that for verb stems in the present tense, you need to insert -는 before -구나, -군, -군요:
- 아, 이제 말씀하시는군요 Oh, (now I see that) you are talking! [ -군요 is a respectful ending ]
- 넌 학교에 일찍 가는구나 (I see that) you are going to school early. [ -구나, -군 are informal ]
