당신한테는 말이 행동보다 중요합니까, 행동이 말보다 중요합니까? 좀 단순한 질문이지만, 이 질문에 대한 대답은 나라마다 또는 사람마다 상대적으로 차이가 나는 법입니다. 우리가 아무렇지도 않게 내뱉거나, 때로는 정말 멋있는 척하면서 위선적으로 하는 말들이, 이걸 가만히 듣는 다른 어떤 사람에게는 크나큰 영향을 줄 수 있지요. 내가 방금 본 영화 ‘헤어질 결심 Decision to Leave (2022)’은 지극히 예술적이고 지적인 표현으로 말과 행동에 대한 깊은 성찰을 하게끔 해주는 걸작, 그야말로 압권입니다. 처음부터 끝까지 몰입감이 있고, 세련미로 일관성 있게 연결된 짧지만 의미심장한 대사들과 세심하게 조각된 장면들, 게다가 주연 배우들인 박해일과 탕웨이의 감동적인 표정 연기는 이 작품을 비롯한 요즘 한국 영화가 성공적일 수밖에 없는 이유를 알게 해줍니다.
한국어를 배우는 여러분들에게는 특히 주연 여배우 탕웨이의 멋들어진 한국말 솜씨를 얘기하지 않을 수 없군요. 보통 한국 배우도 한국말로 연기하기가 쉽지 않은데, 그녀는 외국인으로서 외국어인 한국말을 배워서, 약간 어눌하지만 그래도 명확한 딕션, 그리고 섬세한 감정이 구구절절 녹아있는 억양와 톤으로 세상 모든 이를, 특히 한국말이 모국어인 한국 관중을 감동하게 합니다. 이건 세계 영화 사상 그리 흔한 일이 아니죠. 정말 대단한 배우예요. 한국말을 사랑하는 한국인의 한 사람으로서 탕웨이의 노력과 재능으로 넘쳐나는 비범한 연기에 감사와 환호를 보냅니다.
박찬욱 감독은 이 영화로 올해 칸 페스티벌에서 최우수 감독상을 받아 마침내 거장의 반열에 올랐습니다. 사실 개인적으로 나는 그의 6년 전 작품인 ‘아가씨 The Handmaiden’의 자극적이고 이상한 표현들과 기술적인 데 너무 치중한 데 좀 실망했었어요. 이 영화 ‘헤어질 결심’이 훨씬 수준 높고 인간성의 내면에 대한 깊이가 있어요. 크나큰 업적이며, 이런 작품이 더 자주 나오기를 기대합니다. 지휘자 정명훈과 서울 시립 교향악단이 연주한, 내가 특히 좋아하는 구스타프 말러의 교향곡 5번 4악장과 정훈희의 유명한 옛노래 ‘안개’가 주요 장면 곳곳에서 인간 감정의 조류처럼 번갈아 흐르는 이 걸작을 꼭 한 번 보시길 바랍니다.

Are words more important than actions to you, or actions more important than words? It’s rather a simple question, but the answer to this question would be different from country to country or from person to person. What we say casually or sometimes like hypocrites pretending to be really cool, can have a huge impact on someone who listens to it. The movie ‘헤어질 결심 Decision to Leave (2022)’, which I just watched, is a true masterpiece that allows us to deeply reflect on our words and actions, with its extremely artistic and intellectual expressions. Short but utterly meaningful lines and carefully sculpted scenes coherently connected with sophistication that are immersive from start to finish, and the emotive facial expressions of the leading actors Park Hae-il and Tang Wei give us a sense of why Korean films are bound to be successful these days.
For those of you who are learning Korean, I can’t help but talk about the wonderful Korean language skills of the leading actress Tang Wei. It’s not easy even for a Korean actor to perform well in Korean. But as a foreigner, she learns Korean, a foreign language for her, and touches the heart of everyone in the world, especially the Korean viewers whose mother tongue is Korean, with her slightly awkward but still clear diction and tone that melt with delicate emotions line after line. Such a thing is not very common in the world film history. She is an excellent actress. As one of the Koreans who love the Korean language, I express my gratitude and cheers for Tang Wei’s extraordinary performance brimming with her talent and hard work.
Director Park Chan-wook won the Best Director award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival for this film and finally rose to the ranks of great masters. To be honest, I was a little disappointed that his previous work, ‘아가씨 The Handmaiden’, focused too much on provocative, sensational and weird expressions and technicalities. But after 6 years, his ‘헤어질 결심 Decision to Leave (2022)’ finally shows a much higher level in its sophistication, and has more depth in expressing the inner worlds of humans. This is quite an accomplishment which I expect to see more often. I hope you will take a look at this masterpiece, where my favorite 4th movement of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, performed by Maestro Myung-whun Chung and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, and Jung Hoon-hee’s old famous song “안개(Fog)” alternately flow like tidal waves of human emotions in the main scenes.
The final ocean scene is just beautiful beyond words.
